Serie A clubs have hardly made investments in this January transfer window, spending their lowest amount for the last two decades.

Italian clubs are still recovering from the COVID pandemic and the government’s taxation plans have severely limited the amount clubs are able to spend this month. January transfer windows are usually less exciting than those in the summer, but even still Serie A sides have spent less than expected.

As highlighted by Gianluca Di Marzio, the 20 Serie A clubs have only spent a combined €9.07m so far this transfer window, with the most expensive signing being Udinese’s purchase of Matheus Martins from Fluminense for €6m.

The last time Italian clubs spent this little in January was in 2003, when Brescia spent €650,000 on Roma’s Pep Guardiola.

Some incoming deals could still be completed before this month’s transfer window closes, with Milan reportedly working to sign Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo and Inter ready to replace Milan Skriniar, should he depart to PSG.
