Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi admitted it was difficult to prepare for the first match in Serie A and felt the Neroverdi ‘didn’t take advantage of the opportunities’ in the 1-1 draw with Cagliari.

De Zerbi’s men hosted Cagliari on Sunday and despite saying it was a tough match, the coach felt Sassuolo had enough chances to win the match.

Former coach Eusebio Di Francesco made his debut on the Sardinian bench against the club he first made his name and the Rossoblu scored the opener in the 77th minute through Giovanni Simeone.

Mehdi Bourabia’s excellent free kick secured a point for the home side and De Zerbi hopes his men can soon focus only on what happens in Emilia-Romagna and not on the transfer market.

“They’re a good team and already have an identity,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia. “We created a lot, we didn’t take advantage of the opportunities.

“We conceded a goal from a situation where we are in control, but I have no excuses. We hope to be able to only focus about the League as soon as possible.

“It was a particular month between the transfer market and the national teams. It’s weird only having 15 days to prepare for the championship.”

De Zerbi admitted he has not been given any guarantees that his best players will remain at Sassuolo, with two weeks left of the transfer market.

“I have not received any reassurance, but it’s a matter of habit,” De Zerbi added. “We are one of the few teams that have received several requests for our players.

“We must see it as a compliment, and they must not forget the club that feeds them and helps them get to the national teams."
