The instagram account of the late Diego Maradona sent a message of congratulations to the Napoli squad as celebrations over the team’s first Scudetto in 33 years got underway on Thursday evening.
The account, managed by Maradona’s children, told the current Napoli players that they had just created a new chapter in the long and extensive history of the football club.
The post, which was sent out late on Thursday night, featured an edit of Maradona in his Napoli strip, ascending a Scudetto themed stairway, along with a photograph of the current first team lining up before a recent home game.
The caption read: “A new date to remember, a new joy for the city, for the people, for history. Thank you to all of you guys! FORZA NAPOLI.”
Until this season, Maradona had been the most recent Napoli captain to lead the team to Serie A glory. The honour, this time, was bestowed upon Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
Celebrations of Napoli’s third ever Scudetto victory continued long into the night, particularly in Catania, and show no signs of quieting down any time soon. The Napoli players are expected to arrive back from their title winning trip to Udine on Friday afternoon.
