Atalanta and Livorno remembered Piermario Morosini with moving scenes today, as his jersey was raised into the sky by white balloons.
The 25-year-old midfielder collapsed on the pitch during a Pescara-Livorno Serie B match 10 days ago.
He was a product of the Atalanta youth academy and his hometown was Bergamo, so there was a special minute’s dedication before kick-off at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia ahead of today’s game with Chievo.
Rather than a minute of silence, though, Elvis Presley song Always on my mind played over the loudspeakers. It chimed in with the messages on the banners that read: ‘We will never forget you.’
Livorno stepped back on to the pitch for the first time since the tragedy and marked the occasion before the start of their game with Cittadella.
All his Livorno teammates stepped out wearing Morosini’s shirt and banners read: ‘There will always be 12 on the field now. Ciao Moro.’
Another 300 special shirts were also handed out to the crowd and another banner read: ‘In your life you always battled and you proved your worth on the field too.’
During the minute’s silence, a giant Morosini Livorno jersey was released with white balloons, taking it off into the sky.
