Francesco Totti finally got his first goal of the season to revive Roma. “We had to change gear.”

The Giallorossi earned a 3-2 victory away to Basel in order to open up a three-point lead in second place behind an already qualified Bayern Munich.

“We had to change gear and it was about time. I was able to break my drought, but we wanted to win and now the table looks very different. We're a little more relaxed,” said the captain.

“It is an important victory that helps us psychologically and boosts confidence. We are in good shape and it's the first time this season we have won two games on the trot. Here's hoping there's a third too.

“The unity is our strength, as the team all rows in unison. We hope that we can make the fans and the club happy.”

Totti had not scored since May 9, going 176 days without a goal in all competition. He had been in doubt for this game with a shoulder injury and will miss the Rome derby due to a ban.

“I am always calm, though it is disappointing not to be in the game I care about the most. I'd say I'm about 70 per cent fit at the moment.”

He also made a joke when noticing Alessandro Del Piero had scored at the weekend for Juventus and Pippo Inzaghi got Milan's brace against Real Madrid.

“The little old men are still going strong and in the end we always look to them.”
