Francesco Totti hit back at Luciano Spalletti and Franco Baldini, insisting they “ought to be happy I mentioned them” in his autobiography.

Today is his 42nd birthday and the Roma legend marks the occasion by releasing his autobiography, Un Capitano, with a lavish ceremony inside the Colosseum.

“I am flattered and honoured by such an important evening. Today is my birthday, but that is in the background, because today we talk about the man, the lad, of everything I experienced from childhood to this moment,” Totti told Sky Sport Italia.

Not everyone enjoyed the book release, as ex-Roma boss Spalletti and current director Baldini were upset by his claims that they pushed him into retirement.

“I didn’t expect that reaction. I hope there aren’t any more people who will be angry. I wrote the book to talk about me and my 25 years at Roma. They ought to be happy, because I mentioned them too.

“I would’ve preferred to decide when to retire myself, because I know with my head and my body when the right time to quit is. I would’ve probably done it that year anyway, but in a different way.”
