Francesco Totti believes Luciano Spalletti has learned from his mistakes as Italy national team coach and hopes Nations League victories against France and Israel will be a starting point for the Azzurri.

During his latest interview with Sky Sport Italia on Wednesday, Italy legend Totti shared his thoughts on the Azzurri’s results in last summer’s Euros and the opening two Nations League games in September.

“It didn’t go well this summer. I thought Italy would have done much more,” admitted the 2006 World Cup winner, as quoted by Calciomercato.com.

“We understand just now that players did not get to that competition in the best mental and physical shape. It’s hard to go all the way when this happens.”

Totti: ‘Spalletti learned from his mistakes’ as Italy coach

Spalletti has changed approach on and off the pitch and the early signs are promising as the Azzurri beat France and Israel during the international break.

“Coaching players daily is not like seeing them for just a few days,” noted Totti.

“The training sessions and the approach are different. I believe Spalletti has learned from his mistakes, and I hope these victories in the Nations League will be a starting point.”

During the same interview, Totti admitted being surprised that Roma haven’t offered him a role at the club, insisting that it’s no coincidence that he, Alessandro Del Piero, and Paolo Maldini aren’t working for their ex-teams.

A 2006 Italy World Cup winner, Totti retired in 2017 and worked for the Giallorossi under James Pallotta until 2019. The 47-year-old scored nine goals in 58 international appearances with the Azzurri.
