Francesco Totti says he was forced to retire and reveals he has two regrets about his career.

“I knew I had to retire. One must be realist,” Totti said in an interview with Il Corriere della Sera newspaper.

“However, I wanted to retire in another moment, I was forced to do it and we could have found a solution together,” the former Roma captain continued.

“I wanted to make a decision myself.”

Totti retired in 2017 after his relationship with Roma coach Luciano Spalletti collapsed.

“It belongs to the past. The story was over when he left Roma and I retired. It’s useless to speak about would could have happened. We were both wrong, the club made mistakes too, but it belongs to the past now,” Totti commented.

“I was the Roma captain, as a footballer I was loved and hated.

“Now fans make me feel like a legend of the game, everywhere I go, in Italy or Europe, I am overwhelmed by the love of every fan, a real love, that I would have never imagined,” he continued.

“Sometimes, I still watch the images of my retirement. I always tell myself to switch channel before I read the letter, but I never do it. It’s stronger than me and I get emotional every time I see those images.

“Roma was almost like my first home, I grewp up there an I will die there. It was impossible for leave Trigoria, but I had to take that decision.

“I am sorry not to be at Roma right now, but I’ve taken a new path and I don’t want to leave the group of people I am working with.

“We’ll see what happens in due, three, five or ten years. Never say never in life.”

Does he have regrets about his playing career?

“That foul on Balotelli and the spit at Poulsen. They are the worst things I could do and I still can’t explain why I did them.”
