Francesco Totti joked about Antonio Cassano saying the Roma icon ‘will be forgotten’ in 20 years, assuring the former teammate is ‘still a friend.’

Ex-Bari, Roma, Real Madrid, Inter, Milan and Sampdoria forward Cassano sparked controversy this week when commenting on Christian Vieri’s channel Bobo TV that Totti will not be remembered the same way as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Totti will be forgotten…what about Roma rebel Cassano?

He insisted World Cup winner Totti “will be forgotten” in 20 years’ time.

So when Totti was taking part in an eight-a-side football tournament, he was approached by television show Le Iene to ask his view on the slur.

“It’s only right, I’d already forgotten myself,” joked Totti in response.

“There’s no need for anyone to rush to my defence.”

When Er Pupone was then questioned on the rapport with ‘former friend’ Cassano, Totti intervened.

“Noooo, Antonio is a friend, not an ex!”

The pair had a very up and down relationship, both during their time as teammates at the Stadio Olimpico and for the Italy squad, and since Cassano moved on.

While Cassano is now working as a freelance pundit, largely on Vieri’s Bobo TV channel, Totti has set up his own agency to work with talented young players.

11 thought on “Totti responds to Cassano: ‘I’d already forgotten myself’”
  1. Cassano has been forgotten since 2006. Totti will always be remembered by Italians because he didn’t sell himself to every league every two years. These talking heads try so hard to stay relevant. Stop giving these idiots press coverage.

  2. Totti is eternal, a legend among legends.

“Francesco Totti was and is the best player I ever saw.” – none other than Diego Maradona

  3. Do ya think it may be sour grapes from Antonio? Cassano coulda been up there with Totti if he’d have applied himself in a more constructive way. But not only will Totti be remembered for his great talent, but he’ll be remembered as a 1 club-man legend + world cup winner too. Cassano coulda been in that 2006 squad!

  4. Cassano, you are trying way too hard to say “I’m here, I still exist, hey… look at me too! I am right here.”… Totti is a LEGEND, period. I deeply admire him, very underrated at world stage. He will be in our heart forever (even as a Inter fan) but not you, Cassano. Just grow up.

  5. Totti will eventually have a statue outside of Roma‘s new stadium whenever it gets built. He’s considered the greatest post war Italian footballer. “Dopo guerra”. That means Baresi, Baggio, Maldini, Rivera, and Pirlo. Totti is the greatest of all them.

As Derrick Rae once commented when doing a Roma friendly a few years ago, “You are looking at Francesco Totti, quite simply, an immortal footballer.”

  6. In 20 years’ time, some kids that are yet to be born will be searching Totti’s clips because Cassano is still going around yapping about how Totti will be forgotten.

  7. Claudio Lotito show – you must be joking right? Baggio won a Ballon D’Or and dragged Italy to the 1994 WC Final. The times Roma played in Europe, Totti was often missing in the big games. Don’t compare Totti to Baggio please. Totti does not get mentioned in discussions on the world’s best number 10’s whereas Baresi and Maldini are always in the discussion for best defenders of all time.
Totti was a great player, but there’s better Italians that have played this game.
