Roma captain Francesco Totti was nominated for an even higher honour, after receiving five votes to become the Italian President.

The Presidency of the Republic is designed to ensure that Italian lawmakers uphold the constitution, and voting is taking place to determine a new President after Giorgio Napolitano stepped down to to ill health.

To elect a President of the Republic a secret ballot is held with the 315 Senators and 630 Deputies  who make up the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, as well as 58 regional representatives all voting.

According to Mediaset, in a vote yesterday, five officials who submitted a vote cast theirs for Roma captain Francesco Totti.

However, President of the Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini rejected the votes, as the President must be over 50, making 38-year-old Totti ineligible.
