Francesco Totti admits “I don’t know if I can oblige” Lionel Messi’s request that he play two more years.

The Roma captain is celebrating his 40th birthday today, and has received messages from across the sporting world.

“Thank you all very much, because I never expected such a big tribute,” Totti told Sky.

“I enjoy it because they are my colleagues, even if they’re part of other sports. They are global icons and that’s very gratifying for me.

“Messi said I should play two more years? I don’t know if I can oblige. I’ve met him in person and he’s a phenomenon off the pitch too, sometimes we text each other.

“It means I’ve done something good if I have all these fans.”

Totti famously held up four fingers to Juventus defender Igor Tudor during a 4-0 win, something Alessandro Del Piero referenced in his birthday message.

“I remember the 4-0 well! I’m happy, we’ve always been friends.

“There was never any competition between us, he was one of the best and we achieved a big goal [the World Cup] together.

"I’m glad that above all I know him as a person.”
