Tottenham have sold Toby Alderweireld to Al-Duhail, raising an extra €13m for them to sign Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, whose price-tag is circa €55m.

Spurs completed the transfer today, as Belgium international Alderweireld moved to Al-Duhail for a reported €13m fee.

It ends his six seasons at the North London club, brings in fresh funds and frees up space in the defence for Romero.

Atalanta continue to demand circa €55m to sell the Argentina international, who is fresh from winning the Copa America.

It will represent a huge profit for La Dea, who signed the centre-back from Juventus last summer on a two-season loan with option to buy for a total €18m.

Although Tottenham haven’t yet reached that figure, offering €40m plus bonuses, they are expected to meet the asking price very soon.

New director of sport Fabio Paratici had in fact been in charge when Romero joined Juve from Genoa for €26m in 2019.

He also negotiated the two-year loan with option to buy deal that took ‘Cuti’ Romero to Atalanta last year.

Paratici left Juventus when his contract was allowed to expire in June and immediately took a new role at Tottenham Hotspur.
