Pape Matar Sarr will finally play in Italy tonight, less than a month after his collapsed transfer to Salernitana.

The 20-year-old was a target of the Granata during the January transfer window, with director Morgan De Sanctis trying to bring him to the Stadio Arechi on loan until the end of the season.

The former Roma goalkeeper confirmed his interest in the Senegal international last month saying that Salernitana needed “players with Sarr’s characteristics in that part of the pitch.”

However, the transfer didn’t happen also because Antonio Conte didn’t approve the midfielder’s loan exit. The Italian tactician felt he’d be short of options in midfield without Sarr and didn’t want to part ways with the 20-year-old without a replacement.

The Italian tactician was eventually right as, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur out of action against Milan, Sarr will likely get the nod in the middle of the park at San Siro tonight, in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
