Antonio Conte questioned his future at Tottenham after their fourth defeat in the last five Premier League games, but if Juventus and Inter didn’t convince him to stay, how can Spurs do it?

Juventus and Inter are aware of how demanding the Italian tactician is in terms of new signings. Although Conte said in 2021 that Romelu Lukaku is the only player he’s ever asked for during his coaching career, his tendency to complain about the transfer activity of his clubs is well known in Italy.

Ultimately, this is why he left Juventus and Inter in the past. He was in a very different situation back then because Juventus had won three Serie A titles in a row, while Inter had conquered their first Scudetto in 11 years. Now, Conte has been in charge of Tottenham for barely three months but seems to be already considering his future in North London despite a contract expiring in June 2023.

Conte: ‘Tottenham weakened squad, I realise now this is the club’s vision’

He left Juventus because he didn’t see any room for improvement in the team, but his assessment was wrong as the Old Lady qualified for the Champions League Final the following season. Similarly, Inter are still quite competitive in Serie A and Europe. Conte even failed to qualify for the Round of 16 during his two-year spell at San Siro and are fully involved in the title race. They have been struggling over the last month, but they are still competing on three fronts, contrary to last season.

What Conte wants from Tottenham is clear and the Italian coach made it public precisely one week ago in his interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“What happened in January was not easy. We lost four players in January. Four important players for Tottenham, and we brought in only two,” he said.

“So even just in terms of numbers, rather than reinforce the squad, we on paper weakened it. Bentancur and Kulusevski are ideal prospects for Tottenham because Tottenham are seeking young players they can develop and grow, not players who are ready. That is the issue.”

‘That’s what Conte does when things don’t work out’

On the one hand, Conte says to be attracted by challenges. He loves being the underdog and overturning a team’s faith. He did that at Juventus, Inter and Chelsea, combining five league titles. However, he also expects the club to develop and follow his view constantly. Sometimes, it feels like he never entirely trusts his group of players and what’s worst is that he always erupts in front of the media when things don’t go according to his plans.

Juventus had a winning project when Conte left in 2014. They went on to win 11 trophies under Massimiliano Allegri, reaching the Champions League Final twice. Likewise, Inter are still competitive despite the sales of Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi over the summer. They are genuine title contenders and have qualified for the Coppa Italia semi-finals. According to what Conte says, Spurs have a different vision. They won’t buy ‘ready’ players but will be targeting good prospects for the future, just like Bentancur and Kulusevski. The North Londoners will need to guarantee investments but also a different vision for the future, trying to bring in new faces who can help Conte be competitive for next season, otherwise, he will leave as quickly as he arrived.

  1. 3 at the back …..!!!! Predictable …2 wing backs that can’t defend or attack and can’t cross a ball …they get paid all this money and can’t do a basic skill like cross a ball 💩💩💩

  2. Mr Levy needs to do everything in his power to keep Conte. Although Spurs have significantly improved under his management, they lack any real consistency and this is down to the players. Levy’s track record on the transfer market is abysmal and if he has any faith in Conte’s management skills, then he needs to bring in the players that Conte wants. Spurs supporters are fed up with the lack of success and Levy either backs his manager or loses him.

  3. Football-Italia needs a lot more Tottenham and Chelsea content. We’re just not getting enough Tottenham/Chelsea information on this site.
