Tottenham Hotspur confirm they’ve taken up their option to extend Inter target Toby Alderweireld’s contract by a year.

The Belgian’s deal was due to expire at the end of the season, and it was reported the Nerazzurri could try to sign him on a free transfer.

It would be a similar deal to what they did with Stefan de Vrij last season, signing the Dutchman on a Bosman transfer when his Lazio contract expired.

Spurs have an option for a further year with their centre-back though, and today that has been activated.

“The Club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020,” a statement on Tottenham’s website reads.

“The Belgium international defender has made 135 appearances for us to date since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

“Capped 88 times by his country, Toby began his professional career with Eredivisie side Ajax before moving to Madrid in 2013. His first introduction to the Premier League came during a season-long loan at Southampton in 2014/15 prior to joining us.”
