According to the latest updates from Italy, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona are not prepared to meet the €55m Atalanta asking price for Cristian Romero, so he could remain in Bergamo.

The Argentina international attracted plenty of attention after starring in their Copa America victory this summer, not to mention strong Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia campaigns at club level.

Tottenham have made their approach with two offers already rejected, but Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Fabrizio Romano warns director Fabio Paratici is not willing to go beyond €45m.

That is a long way off the asking price, which is €55-60m for the former Genoa and Juventus centre-back.

Barcelona are involved in the race too, as confirmed by Sportitalia, but they are only in the financial situation to get Romero on loan.

Much like Sassuolo with Manuel Locatelli, Atalanta have absolutely no reason to sell and are more than happy to keep Romero.

Although ‘Cuti’ has given the all-clear to joining Spurs, he wouldn’t be against remaining in Bergamo either, seeing as Atalanta are in the Champions League for the third year in a row.

La Dea finished third in Serie A last season and reached the Coppa Italia Final.
