Pablo Betancur, Lucas Torreira’s agent, confirmed that Fiorentina’s repeated requests for discounts pushed the Uruguayan to return to Arsenal.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan midfielder joined the Viola on a season-long loan deal last summer and he quickly slotted into Vincenzo Italiano’s squad, becoming a key part of the system. Torreira seemed to have finally re-found his form following a tough couple of years, but now everything is at risk again as he prepares to return to Arsenal.

Speaking to FiorentinaNews.com, Bentancur confirmed that Fiorentina failed to sign Torreira due to their repeated requests for discounts.

“We had agreed on a salary with Fiorentina for the coming seasons of €2.7 million net per season. However, Fiorentina now wanted to lower both the salary and the cost of the transfer.

“We could not accept this and neither could Arsenal. Now Lucas has a contract with the Gunners until 30 June 2023.”

The agent then highlighted his client’s disappointment in the Viola.

“Lucas loves, loves the city of Florence. He is very disappointed, there is little to add. Disappointed for the behaviour of the club obviously, not for the football experience or the city, I repeat, he had fallen in love with Florence.”

It’s hard to imagine Torreira finding a spot in Mikel Arteta’s squad, meaning he’ll now have to find a new club this summer as he looks to relaunch his career.

The Uruguayan midfielder made 35 appearances across all competitions this season for Fiorentina, scoring five goals and providing two assists in that time.
