After Domenico Criscito decided against joining Toronto FC, the MLS club has reportedly turned to his Genoa teammate Andrea Masiello instead.

Criscito could still make the move to Canada, but he has now ruled out leaving Genoa during the current Serie A season, which runs to June 30.

Toronto already have Lorenzo Insigne coming in from July 1 as a free agent once his contract with Napoli has expired.

Now Sky Sport Italia claim that Toronto FC have instead turned towards Criscito’s Genoa teammate in defence, Masiello.

This is because they both share the same agent, so negotiations can continue with the same personnel.

Masiello turned 36 last month and like Criscito is a very experienced centre-back.

He joined Genoa from Atalanta in January 2020, with a past at Bari, Siena, Juventus and Avellino.

Masiello was famously suspended for two years and five months as part of a match-fixing scandal, returning in January 2015.

He managed only seven Serie A appearances this season, so Genoa would be more than prepared to let him go.
