Serie A Monday evening football gets back underway this week, as Cagliari travel to Piedmont to face Torino. The Rossoblu secured promotion from Serie B last season by beating Bari in the playoffs but are likely to find Torino a much tougher opponent.

Il Toro have finished tenth in Serie A in their last two seasons and have made a name for themselves as an organised, defensively resolute team, operating on a shoestring budget. This summer has seen the Granata reach into their wallets, however, in order to formalise permanent deals for Nikola Vlasic and Ivan Ilic, after signing both on loan last season.

As a result, Ivan Juric has had limited further resources to strengthen his team and Torino will kick off on Monday evening with a familiar starting XI. Fortunately for the Granata, the strength of their existing squad should still be more than enough to secure a win against Cagliari.

Torino’s greatest strength last season was undoubtedly their defence and they have done well to keep Perr Schuurs at the club despite interest from abroad. Juric’s back three were the fifth most effective in the league last season and they will be confident against a Rossoblu front line consisting of Leonardo Pavoletti and Eldor Shorumadov.

As is often the case, Torino’s focus on defence often limited their impact going forward, resulting in an average of just over one goal scored per game last season. With no offensive reinforcements over the summer, this is unlikely to have changed – so we could be in for another low-scoring match.

Antonio Sanabria was often left to do the offensive duties on his own last season, and the Paraguayan forward was effective, especially in the latter half of the season. Torino’s number nine bagged 12 goals – a career best – and is our tip to retain his form by scoring against Cagliari.

Claudio Ranieri is expected to fast-track his new signings into the starting XI in order to bring the team up to Serie A standards. Ibrahim Sulemana, Tommaso Augello and Eldor Shomurodov could all start, while Simone Scuffet and Jakub Jankto are both also in contention.
