President Urbano Cairo claims Torino beat “big clubs in Italy and Europe” to sign Spanish winger Alex Berenguer.
Torino confirmed Berenguer’s arrival on Tuesday evening after Osasuna had announced a deal had been struck 24 hours before, despite the 22-year-old being seemingly destined for Napoli.
“Alejandro Berenguer is an attacking wingback, who combines technical and athletic qualities,” the patron told Toro’s official website.
“He is 22 years old but, with 80 appearances for Osasuna in the League, already has experience, showing remarkable versatility.
“His talent is the classic expression of a renowned Spanish youth academy, and his qualities made him an objective for big clubs in Italy and Europe this summer.
“Being able to sign him is, therefore, a great source of happiness for us all.
“His arrival further strengthens the level of our attacking department. On behalf of the entire club, I’m happy to greet Alex with a warm welcome. Good luck and, as always, Forza Toro!”
Berenguer, for his part, added: “I must thank Osasuna, the club where I grew up, who allowed me to play first-team football and who helped me realise my childhood dream, but above all to Torino and President Cairo, who really wanted me.
“I couldn’t say no to this opportunity, so I immediately welcomed it with enthusiasm.
“I’m very happy to be part of this great team. It’s a new stage in my life and I’m very motivated about doing well.”
