Torino suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Stade Rennais, seeing a penalty saved after the French side went down to 10 men.

The Granata fielded a 3-5-2 formation including summer signings Daniele Baselli, Danilo Avelar and Afriyie Acquah.

There were early chances for Abdoulaye Doucoure, Pedro Mendes and Baselli, while Fabio Quagliarella blasted over the bar.

A defensive error was almost costly, but Pedro Henrique couldn’t keep his shot down when one-on-one with Daniele Padelli.

A defensive error was almost costly, but Pedro Henrique couldn’t keep his shot down when one-on-one with Daniele Padelli.

Quagliarella was again set up by an Avelar free kick only to skim the bar, but on the stroke of half-time Padelli needed a desperate save to deny Giovanni Sio.

Rennes took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to an absolute screamer from 25 metres unleashed by Mendes.

Substitute goalkeeper Ichazo did well to deny Pedro Mendes a second. Toro thought they were back in the game when Mendes brought down Josef Martinez for a penalty, getting himself sent off in the process. However, the Granata’s appalling record from the spot continued into the summer and Cesare Bovo’s effort was saved.
