Italian teams have not been doing very well in Europe recently and, in today's Press conference, Ventura discussed extensively the club's plan to keep challenging for European qualification.

“There is a project underway,” Ventura told the Press. “Four years ago the dream was to be in the top half of the standings, now the target is higher as we want to compete for European qualification every season.

“This isn't easy to put in practice. Either you have transfer campaigns spending €10-15m for your signings, or you plan things around players when they're still talents that need to grow.

“When you have many young players it's normal that they're not immediately ready for Serie A, but in time they'll let the audience have fun.

“We must show the youngsters the path to be pursued. The objective is not to reach European qualification, but to go in that direction and eventually stay there in a stable fashion.

“Placing our bets on young players is the only way to be successful both financially and in terms of the sport.

“Tomorrow's game isn't important for the result but for the performance. We must play with a calm frame of mind and with courage.

“This is a very positive group. Tomorrow I want to see confidence and serenity, because nothing is impossible.

“The result at San Siro must be the consequence of what we know. Our extremely positive start created great expectations, which of course make every difficulty greater.

“Tomorrow's game is very exciting. We'll face an in-form team in the Scala of calcio.”
