It was the opposite problem at the Dacia Arena, as Alex Berenguer’s header was looping towards the net when the linesman raised his flag and the referee blew the whistle for offside.
Once the whistle is blown, VAR can no longer be used on an offside, so there was no chance to go back and see Berenguer was level.
“It’s impossible to ignore this, as we had scored an early goal that was incorrectly disallowed,” Petrachi told Sky Sport Italia.
“I want to understand what we’re supposed to do. The ball was going towards the goal, why blow the whistle a second beforehand? The move could’ve been analysed on VAR moments later.
“They told us so many times in pre-season during these meetings that the protocol was to wait on offsides and blow the whistle after the ball has gone out of play or is in the net. Why change that now?
“I don’t understand why this keeps happening to Torino. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I am very much in favour of VAR and wonder how other leagues can manage without it, but not when it is misused this way.”
