The 20-year-old was arguably Italy's best player in the last U21 European tournament, in spite of the fact that the Azzurrini crashed out at the group stage.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Inter player claims it's time for him to take a step up.

“Everything has changed,” he said. “Two years ago I was younger, but now I'm among the older players and I ready to bring my experience to the service of my teammates.

“The U21 Euros were a surprise for me too, I didn't expect to play as a starter from the second game since I hadn't played much in the qualifiers.

“There were great expectations and a good atmosphere. It's a shame about the way it ended, we showed that we deserved the Olympics.”

Benassi was then asked about his Coach Giampiero Ventura.

“He was fundamental for me. I had the opportunity of developing, playing in the Europa League with a certain consistency.

“Of course I made a few mistakes, but those have helped me to improve.

“Our Coach was decisive. After the mistake that costed us the derby and the sending off against Zenit [St Petersburg], he had the courage to keep counting on me.

“He believed in me and I don't know how many would have done the same. [U21 Coach Gigi] Di Biagio also deserves my gratitude.

“I'm glad to come across [Davide] Zappacosta and [Daniele] Baselli again.

“The Granata believe in young Italians and are sending out a good message to the whole world of football.”
