Too late for Serie A giants to sign Darwin Núñez amid Man Utd and Arsenal interest

Darwin Núñez has been linked with Milan and Inter, but the player’s price tag is rapidly growing, meaning that Serie A giants will likely miss out on the Benfica star.

Scorer of 32 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions this term, Núñez is one of the most exciting young strikers in Europe. He scored two goals in two games against Liverpool and is expected to leave Benfica at the end of the season. According to ESPN, Nunez has a €150m release clause included in his contract, but he could leave for a lower fee.

Milan and Inter are looking for a new centre forward and both clubs are strongly interested in the 22-year-old.

However, on Wednesday, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that signing the Benfica star is almost an ‘impossible dream’ for Serie A clubs as his price tag is in the region of €80m and his contract runs out in 2025.

The Premier League seems his most likely destination, with Manchester United and Arsenal, who have been scouting the striker for a long time. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have ‘discussed his name internally’ while Arsenal wanted to sign him in January when the striker was not for sale.

The Gunners also wanted Dusan Vlahovic, but the 22-year-old eventually joined Juventus from Fiorentina for €70m plus €10m add-ons. The Old Lady won’t make another similar investment in attack, focusing their efforts on strengthening the midfield.

“I am only focused on Benfica,” Nunez said yesterday when asked about a possible move to the Premier League. “Until the season is over, I won’t say anything about it.”

The kind of foreigner Serie A should be singing, but no-one can afford him, I’d imagine. Juve don’t need him, and Inter would probably have to sell to get him. Expect to see him in England soon.

Couldn’t agree more Mr Leo Dennis. That would be some team and could compete in Europe.

    @ Leo Dennis.

Pretty good if all of those were to happen. Though Dybala’s fitness is a problem.
