The 43-year-old, who scored 57 goals in 99 games for the Viola, knows Prandelli well, as they were part of a great Fiorentina fighting for the top positions in Serie A.

After the 1-1 draw in stoppages against Genoa on Monday night, Prandelli said he hopes the goal could be 'the turning point’.

“Perhaps the wind has changed,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia after the match and added: “The goal of [Nikola] Milenkovic has to be a turning point.

“We take this point at this stage and keep working.”

And his former pupil Toni replied to the statement on Twitter: “Please bring Fiorentina back where they deserve to be.”

Fiorentina sit 17th in Serie A with nine points from 10 games, three points above Torino and Genoa in the relegation zone.

The Viola continue with an away game against Atalanta on Sunday and are yet to win since Prandelli took over at the Artemio Franchi in November.

Their last win and second came against Udinese in on October 25.
