Former Italy and Fiorentina striker Luca Toni admits La Viola ‘need a long-term project’ and explains Franck Ribery’s struggles.

The 2006 Italy World Cup winner played along with the ex France winger at Bayern Munich.

“He was excited to join Fiorentina, then he has had some physical issues,” Toni told RTV 38.

“I can’t see any other player who can provide assists for [Dusan] Vlahovic. I know Franck loves to cut inside from the left, but he is always available for the coach.

“There aren’t many one vs. one situations in the middle of the pitch, it all depends on what the coach wants.”

Fiorentina lost 2-0 at the Artemio Franchi against Inter on Friday and sit 15th in the Serie A table, only seven points above the relegation zone.

“Fiorentina need a project, they have important players such as Amrabat, Castrovilli and Bonaventura, but they are not living up to expectations, it’s too reductive to only think about the strikers," Toni said.

“Fiorentina aren’t weaker than Sassuolo, they confirmed Iachini at the beginning of the season to eventually sack him and now they don’t seem convinced by Prandelli.

“They must pick a project and follow it, buying the right players. The winter transfer window served to solve the problems they are having right now, not to prepare for the future."
