Sampdoria defender Lorenzo Tonelli is heading back to Empoli after a five-year absence.

The 31-year-old came up through the Empoli youth academy, eventually leaving in a €10m deal for Napoli in 2016.

Since then, he has also gone through Sampdoria, but Sky Sport Italia report he is coming home to the Stadio Castellani.

His medical is set for next couple of days, with a two-year contract and option for a third season.

Tonelli is primarily a centre-back, but can also play at right-back when needed.

He made 173 competitive appearances for the senior Empoli squad, scoring 15 goals.

The Tuscans were promoted to Serie A this summer after winning the Serie B title.
