Lorenzo Tonelli could be heading back to Empoli ahead of 2021-22, as the newly promoted side are reportedly in talks with Sampdoria over a move.

The 31-year-old centre-back left Empoli in July 2016, when he joined Napoli for a reported €10m.

The former Empoli youth moved to Sampdoria in the summer of 2018, initially on loan, but was signed on a permanent deal in September 2020.

His contract with the Blucerchiati expires next summer and Il Secolo XIX reports the two clubs are discussing a possible return to Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Tonelli, who has played 51 Serie A games with the Blucerchiati, appeared 173 times for Empoli during his first stint with the club.

And 54 of them came in the top flight, where he contributed seven goals from his defensive position and convinced Napoli of making a move five years ago.
