The centre-back joined the Partenopei from Empoli this summer, but he has been unable to make his debut after being struck down with tendonitis in his right knee.

“I was the first to arrive at Napoli and I was happy, but unfortunately I wasn’t at my best at the end of last season,” Tonelli explained on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“I had problems which dragged on a bit and which didn’t allow me to take part in most of pre-season, but now I’m fine and ready to help out my teammates.”

Tonelli has a number of familiar faces at San Paolo, with Coach Maurizio Sarri being ex-Empoli, along with Elseid Hysaj and Piotr Zielinski.

“Sarri is the same as he was at Empoli, really focused on tactics. On the other hand he’s changed his mentality, because obviously it’s different being at Empoli and trying to save yourself and being at Empoli trying to win.

“Zielinski? I bent over backwards to convince everyone to sign him. For me, he’s a player with huge potential.

“At the moment he’s around 70 per cent, but he can definitely become one of the best midfielders around.”
