Chievo were “ready” to sign Lorenzo Tonelli, their sporting director reveals but “Napoli and the player weren’t”.

The centre-back joined the Partneopei from Empoli last summer, but he arrived with a knee injury and made just three Serie A appearances – although he did score twice in those games.

It was therefore assumed that he would move on this summer, with the Flying Donkeys a potential destination, but the transfer window closed and he remains at the San Paolo.

“When we were ready, Napoli and the player weren’t,” Giancarlo Romairone explained on Radio Crc.

“Then we realised it would be complicated to take him at the last minute and we made another choice, because Napoli were prepared to let him go but also might have kept him.”
