The full-back was given a one-match ban for ‘provoking’ Atalanta striker German Denis into punching him after the 2-2 draw in Bergamo on Sunday.

Tonelli has vehemently denied making death threats to Denis and his son, who is a ball boy at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia.

He claims he was held down and beaten in an ambush organised by Denis and his Atalanta team-mate Luca Cigarini.

Denis was handed a five-match ban for the assault.

Today it was announced Empoli’s emergency appeal against the Tonelli ban has been partially accepted.

The suspension is therefore put on hold pending further investigation into the incident.

It means Tonelli can play against Napoli in the Serie A match tomorrow night.
