Sandro Tonali has made his first appearance in a Newcastle shirt in a pre-season friendly against Rangers at Ibrox on Tuesday evening.

The Italy international joined the Magpies from Milan at the beginning of July in a deal thought to be worth upwards of €70m, making him the most expensive Italian player of all time.

Tonali’s move is also a record fee ever paid by Newcastle, surpassing the record set by Alexander Isak last summer, as well as being a highest-ever sale for Milan, raising even more cash than the sale of Kaka to Real Madrid in 2009.

On Tuesday night, he started his first game under Eddie Howe, deployed in a midfield three alongside academy graduates Sean Longstaff and Elliot Anderson.

Newcastle go in search of their second win of pre-season, having scraped a 3-2 win over local non-league outfit Gateshead on Saturday afternoon. They will also face off against Serie A side Fiorentina on August 5.

Tonali and his teammates will get their Premier League campaign underway against Aston Villa a week later on August 12.
