Sandro Tonali admits Italy ‘lacked concentration’ in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland, but World Cup qualification is still in their hands.

The Azzurri had to come back from a Silvan Widmer opener with Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s header on a free kick routine.

Jorginho had the chance to win it in stoppages when Domenico Berardi was pushed in the box, but blazed the penalty over the bar.

“Football is like that,” Tonali told Sport Mediaset.

“We conceded a goal on the counter that changed the game, but we reacted really well and that is the important thing.

“We lacked a bit of concentration, but we can’t give up now.”

The Azzurri must match Switzerland’s result against Bulgaria on Monday when they travel to Northern Ireland.

The two teams are currently joint group leaders, separated only by goal difference, as Italy have +11 and Switzerland +9.

  1. Such a shame that Jorgingho was allowed to take that oenalty . He missed his last one before this and he isn’t even fully Italian ..i would of preferred Cheisa or Berardi . Barella should sit next game as well as Arcerbi ( too old and slow)

  2. @Michelle if he had scored I doubt you have mentioned that he isn’t fully Italian.

He wears the Italy Jersey so represents the nation regardless of his background.

  3. DiLorenzo exposes a huge Swiss cheese hole in Defense. Mancini needs to address the slow defense or switch to a 3-4-3. The midfield was terrible amd without Verrati they look awful with 3 midfielders not able to find the open men.
Last, we need to start playing a true striker. Sorry, Raspadori is not that great. Scam accs and Lucca have better potential as true strikers.

  4. Michele; that comment is a disgrace about Jorginho not ‘even being full Italian’ that’s small minded biggetry.
He is one of our best players and feels every bit of hurt all us ITALIANS feel.
Where u saying that when he scored against Spain or boswe the euros. Anyone can miss a peno. I think Berardi should have taken the one last night only for the fact I think the pressure was to much for Jorginho but had he scored nobody would care.
Michele you where probably one of the people who was shouting for him to win the Ballon d’or up till yesterday

  5. Dal or any of you guys. Have any of you seen Lucca play? I haven’t and tbh a guy who scores a goal every 2 or 3 games in serie b cannot surely right now be the answer to our problems can he? Can you imagine Spain or Germany playing a second division inexperienced player up front for them. No chance.

  6. Berardi, no. I know he scored last month against Belgium but he alwaya goes to his left. Sommer likely saves it.

Jorginho did well to scrap the hop as Sommer knows how to combat it but just got under it.

  7. Bob, I’m not tired of Mancini, however, I think that he needs to mix it up a bit more. We have become too predictable and he needs to try other formations and other players. Calabria should replace Di Lorenzo who is a very poor defender and offers nothing going forward. If Chillini is not fit, Bastoni should play ahead of Acerbi – always. Verratti and Jorginho are too similar and don’t provide goals. Play only one of them or try a midfield of Barella, Locatelli and Pellegrini that provides more balance and far more creativity and goals scoring threat. Insigne gets too much game time for not a lot of output and maybe Chiesa should be switched to the left and Berardi comes in at right wing.
I would also like Mancini to sometimes use a 3-5-2 with Bonucci, Chiellini, Bastoni/Mancini as the CBs and Chiesa and hopefully soon, Spinazzola as the wing backs – that would be an awesome sight. Also, Bonucci should be taking the penalties.

  8. Raspadori is not even good for u21…Scamacca should be given a chance and why was Dimarco not called up?
