Sky Sport Italia claims Sandro Tonali initially refused to join Newcastle, while according to Tuttosport, his Milan teammates ‘understood’ his decision to leave.

The Magpies are expected to complete Tonali’s signing today when the Italy international will undergo his medical in Romania, where he is currently on international duty with the Azzurrini for the U21 EURO.

Tonali will earn €8m per season plus €2m add-ons, but according to Sky Sport, he had initially rejected the offer from the Magpies. Tonali had repeatedly said over the last few years that he would not consider leaving the Rossoneri.

Sky Sport’s pundit Emanuele Baiocchini added during Friday’s transfer show that Milan directors had told Tonali they would not reject an offer close to €80m so they effectively pushed him to join the Magpies.

According to Tuttosport, Tonali’s Milan teammates were initially ‘humanly sorry’ to see the midfielder leave but then understood his decision considering the offer for both the club and the player.

Tonali is expected to sign a six-year deal with Newcastle. He played for three seasons at Milan, scoring seven goals in 131 appearances.
