Alessio Romagnoli could leave Milan at the end of his contract in the summer and Sandro Tonali is one of the candidates to become the Rossoneri captain in the future.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Romagnoli ‘is likely to leave’ Milan in June as he hasn’t yet reached an agreement to extend his stay at the club.

The Rossoneri captain is on a €5m-a-year deal at San Siro and the Serie A giants have offered him a lower salary, so negotiations between the two parties have been put on hold. Lazio have reportedly made their move to sign Romagnoli as a free agent at the end of the season and, if he leaves, Stefano Pioli will need to name a new captain in 2022-23.

Although Davide Calabria is the No.1 option to take the captain armband, Tonali is also one of the candidates, given his strong bond with Milan and the charisma he’s been showing this term.

Tonali agreed to take a pay cut to return to Milan in the summer after a one-year loan at the club. Milan managed to get a discount for Brescia when they signed him on a permanent deal last summer and Tonali signed with the Rossoneri agreeing on a lower salary than the one of 2020-21.

“Tonali has all the qualities to be the Milan captain in the future,” said former Rossoneri star Massimo Ambrosini.

“However, he is not the only one. Think of Simon Kjaer, for example. He is a natural captain and the leader of his national team.”

  1. Definitely a captain in future but, indeed, there are others ahead of him just now, especially Kjaer and Calabria
