La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Sandro Tonali is in a hurry to be heard by the Turin and the FIGC Prosecutor, but he may have to wait until next week to be interrogated.
Tonali is among those investigated by the Turin Prosecutor for alleged illegal betting, which led to a sporting investigation by the FIGC given that professional footballers are not permitted to gamble on football matches even through legal platforms.
Investigators suspect Tonali did use illegal apps to place bets on football games, like his compatriot Nicolò Fagioli.
Tuesday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (page 14) reports that the Italy and Newcastle midfielder is in a hurry to be heard by the Turin and the FIGC Prosecutors.
‘He knows he made a mistake and that a suspension, perhaps a long one, awaits him. He wants to get rid of the weight he carries inside as soon as possible,’ wrote the pink paper.
Like Fagioli, Tonali wants to be heard by both prosecutors, self-report and reveal all he knows about the case.
One of his lawyers met the Turin Prosecutor Monday morning and Tonali hopes to be heard this week. However, investigators are still scanning the player’s devices and the ex-Milan midfielder may need to wait until next week to be interrogated.
It’s been reported that the Italian midfielder has caught help from a therapist to treat gambling addiction. Breach of Article 24 of the Code of Sports Conduct leads to a suspension of at least three years, but the ban can be halved if defendants ‘collaborate’ with the FIGC Prosecutor, something Tonali is reportedly eager to do.
