Sandro Tonali reveals Gigio Donnarumma texted him after Milan won the title on Sunday: ‘He is happy for us.’

The Rossoneri have won their 19th Scudetto in history, the first one in 11 years.

Sandro Tonali was one of Milan’s key players and made it into the Football Italia Team Of The Season. The 22-year-old scored five goals, including the winner against Lazio in April.

He had joined the Rossoneri permanently in the summer after a disappointing loan spell in 2020-21.

“I’ve felt different since the beginning of the season, I had a different understanding with my teammates and less fear to take risks, I was freer,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Maldini called me to say: ‘No worries, now you are a Milan player for the second time.’ Thanks to my agents for doing everything they could to fulfil my desire and I want to thank [Brescia President Massimo] Cellino as well because he kept his word. He said he wanted me to be happy and my happiness is here.

“When you win, everything changes. Possibly, the bond with the shirt is even stronger,” the Italy midfielder continued.

“The scenes in Reggio Emilia were incredible, but I realised what we had done when we arrived at Casa Milan. I saw the emotion in people’s eyes, incredible.

“I told myself: ‘I won’t take the mobile to take pictures, I want to live this moment and keep it with me forever.

“On paper, there were teams stronger than us, such as Inter for example, but nobody had more desire than us. We put in passion, emotions, and values. Like this, you go everywhere and we proved it.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has changed the history of the Rossoneri by returning to the club in January 2020. The Diavoli have developed massively over the last two years, managing to reach the top this season.

“Zlatan gives a sense of security. Seeing him watch the game from the bench is worth more than a thousand gestures,” said Tonali.

“He is a champion and he put the team ahead of him. He has raised the level and I hope he continues. He is decisive, on and off the pitch.”

How about Gigio Donnarumma? The Italy star congratulated his former club on social media, but has he spoken to any of his former teammates?

“He wrote to me, I hope he is happy with our success, the same way we are happy with his victory [in the League 1],” said Tonali.

“He went to Paris and won straight away. He knew that there was a path to take here, but we made it, step by step.”

Who was the most decisive Milan player this season?

“Rafael Leao. He let us win when we were struggling. He was concrete and he gave us points. Against Verona, he put me in the best conditions to score twice. I was just in the right place at the right time, the rest is his merit.”

Leao was named Player Of The Season by Lega Calcio and Football Italia after contributing to 21 goals in 34 games for the Rossoneri, including three assists in the last match away at Sassuolo.

  1. What did he text? That guy has the nerve.. He really needs to focus on PSG and let Milan go.
Hope he rots on the bench there for another season and then he transfers to Parma to replace Buffon, if he ever retires.

  2. Shouldn’t Gigolo be texting Mbappe instead and see if his new player/president will perhaps offer him the same salary he turned down from the champions of Italy so he could win… *Checks notes* the Fre-he-he-he-nch league title.

Maybe at least he’ll get a starting spot for the first team next year.
