Sandro Tonali has shattered a number of long-standing transfer records with his move from Milan to Newcastle, which was officially announced by the Premier League club on Monday morning.

The 23-year-old has become the most expensive Italian player in the history of the sport. His transfer, although officially undisclosed, is widely believed to have been for €70m plus an extra €10m in additional bonuses.

Tonal’s move has leapfrogged him past the previous record holder Jorginho and his €57m  move from Napoli to Chelsea in 2018.

The transfer is also expected to be the most valuable in Milan’s club history, breaking the 14-year record set by Kaka’s move to Real Madrid in 2009, which is thought to have been worth around €67m.

Tonali has also become the most expensive signing in Newcastle’s history, surpassing the record that had been set by Alexander Isak last season following his arrival from Real Sociedad for a fee believed to be worth a total figure of €70m.

The Italy international is also now the fifth-most expensive sale from Serie A, behind Romelu Lukaku’s move from Inter to Chelsea, Paul Pogba’s from Juventus to Manchester United, Gonazlo Higuain’s from Napoli to Juventus, Zinedine Zidane’s from Juve to Real Madrid.

Tonali will soon join his teammates for the first time and begin preparations as Newcastle head for their first full season in the Champions League since 2002-03.
