As of Friday, Newcastle midfielder and Italy international Sandro Tonali is thought to have officially begun the 10-month he received for his involvement in illegal betting.

The formalities dictate that the ban officially begins the day after the release of a statement from the FIGC, which was delivered on Thursday afternoon, meaning the ban begins on Friday.

Tonali’s suspension means that he will be unavailable to Newcastle for the remainder of the 2023-24 season and he will also miss out on Luciano Spalletti’s Italy squad for Euro 2024. He will be eligible to return to competitive action in August 2024.

The ban also includes a probation period, meaning that Tonali will face a ban of up to 48 months if he is found to have gambled illegally again.

As well as having received a fine of €20,000, Tonali will also have to attend therapy sessions to help treat his self-admitted addiction, as well as having to make at least 16 public appearances in the coming months to warn others against falling into the same trap as he did.
