GR Sports, the agency that represents Italy international Sandro Tonali, have released a statement, providing updates on the FA charges that were brought against the Italy international at the beginning of the week.

Tonali was charged with misconduct by the English FA on Thursday, having allegedly placed 50 bets on football between the period of August 12 and October 12, after his €80m transfer from Milan to Newcastle last summer.

The FA charges are separate to those made by the FIGC in October 2023, which resulted in a 10-month worldwide ban and a €20,000 fine for Tonali.

Newcastle provided a brief update into the situation on Thursday, although they were not able to provide too much colour due to ongoing investigations.

Tonali’s representatives have since released their own statement, revealing that Tonali decided to self-report to the FA, as he had previously done with the FIGC in Italy.

“It should be noted, in relation to the reports in the English and Italian press, that the ongoing investigation is a due act after Newcastle player Sandro Tonali, decided in October 2023 to self-report to the FA, as he had previously done with the FIGC,” a statement from GR Sports read on Good Friday.

The statement continued by explaining that Tonali reported himself to the FA “in order to clarify his position regarding the betting he had carried out at a time prior to the start of the proceedings in Italy.

“We are therefore not talking about anything new, but simply about recurring facts before the Italian disqualification, which the player voluntarily wanted to bring to light even to the English Federation to put a definitive end to a negative and very painful parenthesis of his life,” GR Sports continued.

“Sandro Tonali will continue to fully cooperate with the FA as he did with the FIGC and do everything possible to ensure that these proceedings can be resolved as quickly as possible.”

  1. That 80 million bought in by Milan is looking like a master stroke of genius now. The way his career in Newcastle has begun means it might not ever take off. Shame cos as a Milan fan I have a lot of affection for Sandro.
