Tommasi: ‘Salaries last thing on our minds’

The Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi predicts trouble when it comes to discussing the fixture list and player wages in Serie A.

The League has been suspended and the clubs are eager to know when they can return to the field, but Tommasi has urged them to be patient, despite suggesting that he’s “not very optimistic” that the clubs will follow the guidelines from the government.

“I think they are thinking about aligning themselves with the decisions of the whole country,” Tommasi told Radio Anch’io. “Right now, I don’t know anything more than that.

“We are talking about the month of March, we are talking about a recovery that is not yet fixed, because it can’t be defined yet. But I think salaries are the last thing we are thinking about.

“At the moment, I’m not very optimistic that we align ourselves with the country.”

The former Italy international has claimed that playing in August could be “positive” but knows there will be all sorts of contractual implications to sort out if the campaign goes beyond June 30.

“It would be a positive thing [to play in August], we would all like to go back, as it would mean the situation has improved, “Tommasi added. “There are still technical details, though. Issues of contracts and deadlines.

“If you are playing far ahead in time, you have to plan many things. Right now, you can’t move away from your own municipality, so it’s difficult to predict.

“I hope we can get back to training. At least because it would mean that Italy has solved or is solving this moment.”
