Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi warns the medical protocol and timing of the Serie A season remains in the air after training resumed.
Many clubs returned to work this week after the Government changed the guidelines on solo training within a centre, as long as social distancing was maintained.
However, a final decision on the medical protocol and whether the Serie A season can resume should be made this week.
“There are elements missing at the moment, we don’t have any guarantees or dates to build around,” Tommasi told Pierluigi Pardo on an Instagram Live chat.
“Who takes on the responsibility of letting football resume if it’s impossible to play with zero risks? Is it the athlete, the club, the Government? We need to start with the ideal protocol.
“The vast majority of players returned to training today, but that was a voluntary decision. They would’ve been free as citizens to go running in the park or in a training ground, so they opted for the latter. As the weeks go by, we will increasingly be limited as we wait for a decision.
“We all agree that we want to get back out there, but it’s all about the right moment to resume.”
The AIC have been adamant a salary cut should not be forced upon them, especially for players in the lower divisions who don’t earn as much money.
“We must protect everyone’s health and also not let footballers be made to seem like privileged figures. It’s about the staff as well, everyone close to a football team.
“The protocol is about training, but not for official games, not for journeys, not for when two teams play each other on the pitch. We are working on a protocol that can allow us to start training in squads from May 18-19.”
