Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi wants squads to be heard when forming the Serie A medical protocol. ‘There’s no point risking a start now if it could all grind to a halt again.’

Just 24 hours after the Government and FIGC agreed a medical protocol, the Serie A clubs and Players’ Association demanded changes.

They want to ensure that if someone tests positive for COVID-19, only he goes into a 15-day quarantine and not the entire squad.

“The voice of players is not given the necessary weight during a phase when returning to training and playing means we cannot respect the safety protocols,” Tommasi told La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno newspaper.

“There ought to be attention paid to all those people who come into contact with athletes, so any protocol must be considered and shared by everyone involved.

“As of now, we don’t know what the modifications to the protocol are going to be. The previous one was too rigid and without doubt complicated, especially as not all the clubs have the infrastructure to handle this situation.

“There’s no point risking a start now if it could all grind to a halt again straight away. However, there’s another matter that isn’t really being considered, which is what does it mean if there is a player who tests positive for COVID-19? What is he really risking? Knowing that would help us to make decisions.

“What we want is to ensure the health and safety of everyone who has to put themselves on the front line of this situation. The club medics will have an important role and we can only rely on them.”
