Atalanta centre-back Rafael Toloi got the go ahead from FIFA and said ‘it’s a dream’ to play for Italy, who have ‘the strongest defenders in the world’.

The Brazilian born defender arrived on loan at Roma in January 2014 but was then signed on a permanent deal by Atalanta one season later.

The 30-year-old has impressed with the Orobici but was not allowed to play for the Azzurri until now.

“It’s a huge emotion, it’s the result of everyday work and commitment,” Toloi said at a press conference. “I hope to make it as good as possible, it’s really a dream.

“My ancestors are from Trentino, my Italian nationality is not new, I had it even before arriving, but in the last two months I had the OK from FIFA to play with the Azzurri.

“I’m very happy to be here and to be part of the Atalanta group, being in a team that is doing well has helped me.”

He admitted it would be different than playing with La Dea, as the defender has a particular style under coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

“In my opinion, this way of playing is due to Gasperini,” he said. “I learned a lot from him.

“I have to go out, press hard, play and create situations.

“It’s a bit different here, but it’s an added value, there won’t be any problems. I’m 30 years old, I’m no longer a kid.

“I want to show my qualities and continue to give my best, also for Atalanta.

“The Italian defenders have always been the strongest in the world. The team are doing well, they have always played well, even on a defensive level.

“We must continue on this path.”

Toloi said Brazil was never an option.

“Brazil never contacted me,” he revealed. “When I heard that Italy wanted to call me, I immediately said yes and my whole family was happy.”
