Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli admits his ‘biggest regret’ is not signing Corentin Tolisso in the summer of 2016.

Napoli were heavily linked with a €26m swoop for Tolissobut the France midfielder ended up staying at Lyon for one more season and joined Bayern Munich the following year.

“Fabian Ruiz? We already wanted him last January, but it wasn’t possible,” Giuntoli told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, we managed to wrest a promise from the player and his agent. When Ancelotti arrived, he asked us to sign him.

“Strangely he was the only player we’d already locked up, so it was a strange and pleasant coincidence.

“Negotiations for Higuain’s replacement? I took Milik to Capri. He came from Ajax and I wanted to impress him with the excuse that there was work in progress…

“My biggest regret? We’d closed a deal for Tolisso, who only had to undergo a medical, but Lyon qualified for the Champions League that year and the player preferred to stay in France.

“It was a shame as he went to Bayern Munich the following year.”
