Roma director Tiago Pinto effectively confirms Nicolò Zaniolo asked not to be in the squad against Spezia. ‘He put his individual interest in front of those of the collective,’ but wouldn’t rule out bringing him back in after February 1.

It kicks off at the Stadio Alberto Picco at 17.00 GMT.

Inevitably, when director of sport Tiago Pinto arrived for his usual pre-match interview with DAZN, the questions were about Zaniolo.

The Italy international was left out of the squad in the Coppa Italia midweek, officially due to a stomach bug, but for this game was simply left behind after training with the rest of his teammates.

“All of us in football know there are two different seasons, one where the transfer market is closed and we can all relax a bit more, another when the transfer window is open and someone tries to put individual interests in front of those of the collective,” was Tiago Pinto’s response.

“Unfortunately, it is not the first time this has happened. Today all those who are here have the desire and motivation to fight for Roma and bring the three points home.

“I might’ve made many mistakes, but from my first day at Roma to my last, the collective needs and interests of Roma will always come first.”

If Zaniolo does not manage to find a new club in January, will he be brought back into the fold?

“As I said, we are accustomed to there being two different seasons. We have to wait for the end of the window and whatever happens from February 1 there will be a united, strong Roma with clear objectives in mind.”

Juventus were docked 15 points over the inflated capital gains case, so does that change the way Roma see potential Champions League qualification?

“Our situation cannot change, we must focus on every game, starting with the very difficult one today, because many things can happen off the field and we cannot reach the end of the season with the regret that we did not do everything we could to qualify for the Champions League. We must win our games.”

It is widely reported that Zaniolo put in a transfer request and in turn Roma have no intention of extending the deal that expires in June 2024.

So far, only Tottenham Hotspur have made a firm offer, on loan with obligation to buy based on appearances, but Milan, West Ham United and Nottingham Forrest are also interested.
