Didier Deschamps was reportedly undecided about calling up the Inter striker, as he had been struggling with an ankle injury that affected his form, forcing him to rely on painkillers and injections to stay fit for Simone Inzaghi’s side.

However, the French coach ultimately chose to include him in the squad after the 27-year-old delivered a brilliant performance in the Nerazzurri’s Champions League clash with Feyenoord, where he tormented the Eredivisie side’s defense and netted a stunning early goal.

Thuram’s call-up is likely to be a concern for Inzaghi, with several crucial fixtures ahead for the Nerazzurri. As their top scorer this season, his form will be vital in keeping pace with their Scudetto rivals and progressing in the Champions League.

The former Borussia Mönchengladbach striker was one of two players Inzaghi had hoped to see spared from international duty. Federico Dimarco, who has been sidelined with an injury in recent weeks, could still be included in Italy’s squad for their upcoming Nations League clashes with Germany.
