Inter striker Marcus Thuram feels he has already improved since joining the Nerazzurri and explains why he moved to San Siro in the summer, despite interest from many other clubs, including PSG.

The France international has scored three goals in 10 appearances across all competitions this season. He joined Inter on a free transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach last summer, signing a contract until June 2028.

Many other clubs, including Milan and PSG, were interested in Thuram last summer, so L’Equipe asked the French striker why he picked the Nerazzurri.

“I spoke to many clubs and it was not an easy choice. I knew it would define my career and I know I took the right decision,” Thuram replied.

“Italy is teaching me to be specific in my work. This is one of the reasons why I chose Inter. This will help me settle into a central role. It brings me other things too. In Italy, I’ve been asked to hold the ball, pass it to midfielders and attack the space. It’s a mix of many things. I had to learn new methods and I’ve improved so much in just a few months here.”

Thuram has immediately become a regular starter with Lautaro Martinez, the current Serie A leading scorer and the most prolific player in the league in 2023.

“Lautaro is one of the best strikers in the world. He is a very technical player and he knows how to link up with his teammates,” said Thuram.

“What I like is his quality in the final touch and the calm he has. I am happy to play with him. Playing close to Alexis is inspiring too. He never gives up. Also, the way Marko Arnautovic moves inspires me. This is the perfect club to continue progress, but there are many things I still need to work on.”

Thuram was already close to moving to the Stadio Meazza in 2021, before suffering a severe knee injury. He was impressed by the Nerazzurri even back then.

“Inter called me two years ago when I was still playing as a winger,” he revealed.

“However, they already saw me as a No.9. Not many had this vision, but they had a very precise idea of my development.

“I know why I made this choice. Whoever knows football knows what Inter represents and the immense players who have been at this club,” continued Thuram.

“When we wear this shirt, we feel we are wearing history. There is incredible enthusiasm. When I meet people in the street, everyone talks about the upcoming game. Look at the derby. The noise and the emotions after my goal were incredible. Inter are one of the biggest clubs in Europe. I’ve joined a stable team that works well and that reached the Champions League Final last year. They have great players and my choice was linked to all this.”

Thuram scored his first goal for Inter in the latest derby della Madonnina against Inter which the Nerazzurri won 5-1.

His first Champions League goal for the Serie A giants came in a 1-0 victory against Benfica at San Siro last week.
