Though Italy were eliminated from EURO 2024 at the round of 16 stage on Saturday evening, there are still a handful of players the CT could turn to for the upcoming series of World Cup qualifiers and Nations League fixtures.

The Azzurri were defeated 2-0 by Switzerland at Olympiastadion in Berlin on Saturday, bringing their tournament to a close in the first knockout game. Both CT Luciano Spalletti and FIGC President Gabriele Gravina are due to address the media on Sunday.

Whoever takes charge of the Italy national team moving forwards, there were several players not involved at EURO 2024 who could make an immediate impact on the team moving forwards.

Three players Italy could turn to

Perhaps the most high-profile of them is Sandro Tonali, who is still barred from being involved in competitive football, but his ban for gambling breaches is due to end in August, meaning he will be available for selection for Italy’s next scheduled fixture against France on September 6.

Another is Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie, who missed EURO 2024 through a late injury to his quadriceps muscle. With Federico Dimarco also absent through injury for Italy’s game against Switzerland, the Spurs youngster can provide Italy with another creative option on the left flank if needed.

There is also Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto, who played an important role in his club side’s run to the Championship play-offs in 2023-24. Recent reports suggest there are a selection of Premier League clubs interested in snapping him up this summer, including the exciting Crystal Palace.

  1. Italy have has this article says several players unavailable for euro 24. This has had an affect during the tournament but Italy should be like Spain with plenty of quality options of players, whatever the situation 🙄

  2. How about selecting a number of Italy under 21 players for the squadra nazionale. These youngsters can grow in their new role and prepare for the 2026 World Cup

  3. Tonali, Orsolini, Zaniolo, Locatelli, Ruggeri, Berardi, Bernardeschi, Verrati, Pessina, Scalvini, Acerbi, Lucca even.

  4. The solution is not these players, it’s the total mindset of Italian coaches and football heads, drastic and painful decisions have to be made ….

  5. Defo pick from the under 21’s
Get A real coach with real achievements.. the best italian player ever was roberto baggio and he is licensed to coach Italy however the federation is corrupted they won’t let him do what’s right for the national team hence he isn’t interested.. 2nd comes to mind is Ancelotti however same issue, if you don’t give these golden stars full control italy will not make any world cups ever again.. this medicore coach is an insult to Italian football.. the squad half of it belongs in the bin no disrespect

  6. Pls set up camarada fast…he is top quality…..he must be ingrained in squad very very fast

  7. I would say Coleta. Liberali . Camarda . Cesar Casadi. Give these youngster chance .they will deliver.

  8. Problem for italy is the system. These youngsters from 17.19. 21 performed well.
They will be evolved by playing another worldcup debacle on the cards if they do not move in right direction.

  9. Look at the article they r suggesting 2 foreign players and 1 italian. That alone is the problem in italy. Not sure why no one sees this.

  10. @Italian Aren’t Udogie and Gnonto born in Italy? If they are, then they’re Italian. Racism wouldn’t make the Italian National Team world beaters again. Look at what Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal is doing for Spain or Musiala for Germany.

  11. Vartak what would make Italians good again is reinstalling their identity and not always trying to change it. It’s always been the “group” that won for Italy. Spalletti could not create that. Udogie and Gnonto are born in Italy so they can play for Italy. What @Italian is referring to is this
Many Italians, especially in Northern Italy and Central Italy, belong to Haplogroup R1b, common in Western and Central Europe. The highest frequency of R1b is found in Garfagnana (76.2%) in Tuscany and in the Bergamo Valleys (80.8%) in Lombardy.

  12. How about Locatelli, verrai, lorenso Lucca, Lorenso Colombo, Marco nasti, Roberto piccoli.
If spain aren’t afraid to play young player with talent then we should be able to without hésitation.
